About This Opportunity
This architect is responsible for securing all retail payment channels.  Work with Enterprise Architecture to reduce Target’s attack surface and PCI compliance scope, and assist technology product teams to apply established payment security patterns.  The role will include representing technical details of payment data flows to compliance auditors and insurance underwriters.  Channels will include traditional in-store registers (point-of-sale), mobile payments, e-commerce, and may include emerging payment forms such as Bitcoin (or other blockchain variants), PayPal, etc.  Strong background in financial data encryption schemes, tokenization methods, and EMV (chip-n-PIN) transaction verification flows required.  Background in fraud prevention preferred.
The role will advise other deeply technical resources in InfoSec and TTS at-large, from application/product owners to VP-level technology portfolio owners.  Communication acumen is critical; this role must tailor message to audiences of varying technical aptitude, use diplomacy to influence consensus on priority, and continually confirm audience understanding of complex technical processes.

  • With Enterprise Architecture, design protection schemes for new payment methods/technologies and financial data flow approaches.
  • With the assistance of the Business Information Security Office (BISO), advise technology portfolio owners on highest impact threats to payments and assist technical leadership in devising countermeasure programs.
  • Represent technical security controls present in production payment tender flows to auditors and underwriters
  • Work with Target Fraud team to design and deploy new counter-fraud and anti-counterfeiting technologies and processes
  • Supply patterns for securing cloud infrastructure for deployment of e-commerce systems
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • BA/BS or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of multi-disciplinary experience (software, hardware, network) in IT, preferably in engineering or systems architecture
  • 3-5 years of direct experience in financial systems IT:  payments, financial transfers, anti-fraud, e-commerce
  • PCI scope management techniques
  • Familiarity with EMV transaction flow and cardholder verification methods
  • Familiarity with cryptography, particularly DUKPT algorithms
  • Fluency with risk-based decision making
  • Communication skills:  message precision tailored to audience, diplomacy, adaptiveness, discretion, mentorship, charisma in building buy-in for vision

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Deep knowledge of EMV specification and modes of exploiting it
  • Deep understanding of payment tokenization schemes (ApplePay, GooglePay, etc.)
  • Understanding of alternative media for payment exchange (NFC, Bluetooth, SMS, etc.)
  • Understanding of blockchain applications (Bitcoin, etc.)
  • Understanding of TR-39 PIN security standard
  • Hands-on:  can prototype and demonstrate solutions in software language of choice
